Hummus without Tahini {Portion Fix/21 Day Fix}

I only tried hummus for the 1st time a couple of years ago at a party, I was not impressed. Then I bought the leading brand at the store and had the same outcome. I even bought all the ingredients for a popular recipe and tried making it from scratch. Always some “aftertaste” that I just didn’t care for. One day I saw a recipe on Pinterest for hummus without tahini added and decided to give it a try. 

I discovered that I like everything in hummus except the tahini. So I set out to make a hummus recipe with my favorite flavors just without tahini and include a container count for it too. 

What ingredients go into my hummus without tahini?

The main ingredient in hummus is chickpeas/garbanzo beans. After that, it is just lemon, and spices in the right proportions. My version is extra lemony cuz I like it like that!

There are a few recipes that use great northern beans instead of chickpeas. The chickpeas have a tough “skin” on them. I tried a couple of methods to get the skins off of the chickpeas but it is just too much trouble to do. But I think I am going to try the great northern beans for a chocolate version of hummus soon so it will be “smoother” though. Check out this cookie dough hummus recipe! 

I do like to make this in my blender instead of my food processor. It seems like my blender makes a smoother, fluffier version than the food processor version. 

One of the reasons my version is “fluffier” is because I use some of the juice out of the can of chickpeas in the hummus. That bean juice actually has a name– Aquafaba. Auquafaba can be used as an egg replacement in recipes and can even be made into mayonnaise. Vegan recipes often use it. By adding some of the juice back in it gets a creamier texture,  kind of like you added mayo to it.

Topping suggestions for extra flavor

I like to float 1 teaspoon of olive oil on the top sometimes and add some extra “seasoning” to some bites. Make sure to count any oil you add to it as a teaspoon.

I have also broken my hummus into 5 tablespoons and dressed each one in a different way. I was in love with the cracked black pepper loaded one on this plate! 

What do I like to serve with this hummus?

A plate full of fresh veggies is a favorite way for me to eat it. 

But most of the time I eat it with homemade pita chips. I use Joseph’s brand pita bread cut into chips. 

2 of these will = 1 Yellow container. It is so many chips I usually only use 1 pita for 1/2Y!!  I talk more about bread/wrap options in this post: BREAD PRODUCTS

I basically cut the pita in half and then separate those halves from each other. Stack all the halves up and cut them into chips. Lay them on a cookie sheet in a single layer and spray the first side with olive oil spray and lightly salt (optional). Turn your oven on 350 degrees but do not wait for it to preheat. Put the chips straight in the oven and bake about 3-4 minutes. Turn every chip over and again spray with olive oil spray and bake another 3-4 minutes watching them carefully cuz they can go from golden to BURNED in the space of a minute.

Hummus without Tahini {21 Day Fix}

Ingredients Method

Ingredients
  

  • 1 can chickpeas/garbanzo beans, drained, reserve ¼ cup of the juice from can.
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • 3 Tablespoons light tasting olive oil or your favorite
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1½ teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper or red chili flakes, to taste

Method
 

  1. Add all the ingredients except the bean juice in a blender. Pulse a couple of times. Add a few teaspoons of juice at a time till you get it the consistency you want. (I use the whole ¼ cup, but you might not. )
Container Counts: Fill your BLUE container =1B
