Don’t you just love a good Philly Cheesesteak?!? Don’t you just love some good sloppy joes?!? (Here is a great recipe) I took the best of both worlds and made Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes!!
What veggies will you use for Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes?
There is an aged old argument over whether or not bell peppers belong on a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. I don’t argue about it because every cheesesteak sandwich I have ever ordered in a restaurant has had them on it. Maybe in Philadelphia, they debate it but here in Tennessee, we don’t. Green peppers it is!!
Another variable is mushrooms. I have had a sandwich with them and without them and like them both. Adding them helps me get more veggies into my day but if you don’t like them you could leave them out and just adjust your container count by 1/4 of a Green.
Lastly are the onions. Again this is a personal preference, not on using onions because they are an important ingredient, but in the type of onion you chose. I prefer a sweeter onion like a Vidalia but a yellow or white onion would work too.
What else is needed?
Lean ground beef is the “steak” part of this recipe. You could use ground turkey or ground chicken too but I prefer beef. I scramble it in my big black skillet with no seasoning so that it “dry” cooks. If you add salt or the veggies to the pan then it “wet” cooks and you want your meat dry and well-drained of grease. Putting the meat in a colander (I run hot water on it a little to help “rinse” some of the grease out of it” and wipe the skillet out of the grease helps make this a 1 pan meal. I do add fat to the recipe but in the form of butter!
Butter is an important ingredient to this recipe to help give it some richness. Sautee the veggies in it till tender. Then add the meat back into the pan and add the “spices” and broth, cooking everything together for another few minutes.
And then lastly I add the cheeses. I use a combo of 2 that seems to get the flavor I am going for. Provolone cheese is the most common kind for a regular Philly Cheesesteak but I wanted a “melty” style of cheese, so I used 1 original Laughing Cow wedge. And I use 2 1/2 tablespoons of grated cheddar cheese instead of the Cheese Wiz that some people use. It is the cheese that helps bind the meat and veggies together.
If you wanted to add a slice of provolone to your sandwich you would have to account for it as 1/2B container added to the container counts.
Which spices do I use?
The spices and flavors I use are basic. Garlic powder, salt and pepper, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and ketchup.
For my 21 Day Fix followers…. yes I said ketchup. The Ultimate Portion Fix cleared up some information about store-bought foods. If a food has less than 8g of natural sugar per serving it can qualify as an “approved” food. Things like pasta sauces and salad dressings come to mind. I base some of these store-bought decisions on whether or not Beachbody has a recipe for it. They do have a ketchup recipe so I started searching for ketchup.
I tried some of the specialty, organic, high-priced ones. YUCK! Some kind of beet concoction was the worst!
But I finally spotted one that fit the criteria! Of all the places I found it at Walmart and it happens to be their store brand. Real sugar, check. Less than 8g per serving, check. No artificial ingredients, check. It has 4g of sugar per 1 Tablespoon. 4g of sugar is a teaspoon. I am going to count this as 1 teaspoon of sweetener per Tablespoon serving. I am only using 2T for the entire 4 servings so it ends up being only 1/2 teaspoon of sugar per sandwich.

What am I going to serve with these Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes?
My very 1st thought was FRENCH FRIES!! And I have the perfect recipe for them right here. I have to plan ahead for these but they are SO worth it. And as long as I have the sweet teaspoons for it I am going to have some KETCHUP with them!
I think I am going to make a batch of slaw too. Either my mayo-based one or my vinegar-based one
I haven’t decided which yet……
